The Simple Rule That Can Change Your Career
Why Would a Pro Photographer Work for Free?
The other day I was enjoying my daily routine of YouTube and while watching a Peter Mckinnon video, and I came across an interesting quote from photographer, musician, & creative Lane Dorsey, on the topic of working for free.
At first, it might seem surprising—someone at Lane's level, with years of experience, working without pay? You’d think clients and businesses would be lining up to throw opportunities at him. But the reality of photography is much more nuanced.
Lane explains that photography isn’t just about shooting; it’s about networking and building connections. It’s about showing people that you care deeply about their project and that you’re eager to collaborate and create. And sometimes, this means working for free—not endlessly, but strategically.
The Value of Test Shoots
Lane compares test shoots to a lottery ticket: they may lead to incredible opportunities, and sometimes they don’t. But what makes them valuable isn’t just the potential connections, it’s the growth and creativity that YOU bring to the table.
Ask yourself:
Are you trying out a new lighting setup?
Are you perfecting a technique you’ve been working on?
Are you pushing your creativity into uncharted territory, even if you’re unsure of the outcome?
When approached with the mindset of learning and growing, every shoot—paid or unpaid—becomes a stepping stone in your journey. Lane emphasizes the importance of finding value in these shoots for yourself, just as much as for the client. Even if nothing comes of a test shoot, you’re left with work you’re proud of—something that can live on your website or social media, showcasing your passion, style, and skill.
But let’s be clear: not everything should be free. While test shoots cane be valuable, not every new opportunity is worth your time. As a freelance photographer, your time and expertise are valuable. When Lane was just starting out his freelance career he would live religiously by this simple rule to decide when a shoot was worth it:
Lane’s 3 B’s of Freelance Photography
When taking on a project, Lane asks himself:
Is it building a bridge? Will this shoot help me connect with people or brands that could lead to future opportunities?
Is it building your book? Will this project add valuable work to my portfolio, allowing me to showcase a new skill or style?
Is it building your bank account? Will this shoot pay me fairly for my time and talent?
If the answer is “yes” to at least one of these, it may be worth pursuing. If not, you should think twice before committing.
Play the Long Game
Lane puts it best: “Sometimes you have to give a little, to play the long game.” The connections he’s built through test shoots have opened doors to collaborations with bigger brands. More importantly, these projects have allowed him to refine his skills, showcase his creativity, and stand out in the industry.
When working for free, focus on projects you genuinely care about—businesses or products that excite you and align with your vision. That passion and commitment will shine through, making your work more impactful and increasing the chances of it being shared with others.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, some of the projects I’m most proud of were unpaid. These shoots gave me the freedom to explore my creativity, experiment with styles I wanted to develop, and refine my skills as a photographer. Along the way, I built a network of incredible people that opened doors to future opportunities. Every one of those test shoots played a role in shaping the photographer I am today.
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been in the photography game for years, free work can still play a role in your career. Approach it strategically, with the goal of learning, growing, and connecting. And always remember the 3 B’s—building bridges, building your book, and building your bank account—to guide your decisions.
Next time you’re weighing a potential project, ask yourself: What am I building with this opportunity?
